How might we facilitate active discovery and engagement with sports at Cornell?
How might we facilitate active discovery and engagement with sports at Cornell?
Imagine being a Cornellian excited to support Cornell Big Red. However, when you check your mailbox for sports updates, you're overwhelmed by the disorganized information. You try searching on the web and asking your friends, but finding accurate details about games can still feel like a scavenger hunt.
Problem & User Research Findings
Currently, it can be very difficult to conveniently discover and track sports games at Cornell. We conducted 10+ user interviews to understand how Cornellians currently engage with sports events, and we found the following main issues:
The only sources of information are scattered emails and the official athletics website, where content is dispersed and not easily accessible for quick discovery.
Cornellians outside the athletics community have limited exposure to sports news updates and lack the initiative to actively explore them.
Together with the Cornell AppDev team, we recognized this as a meaningful problem space aligned with our mission to positively impact the student community. Hence, we decided to initiate the creation of Score, for which I led the 0-to-1 design as the founding designer and product manager.
Product Vision & Feature Spaces
Score aims to become Cornell’s all-in-one on-the-go sports discovery hub, facilitating seamless discovery and engagement with Cornell sports.
To achieve this mission, I brainstormed potential feature spaces and identified three key features for the MVP with the highest impact and feasibility:
Browse all future Cornell sports games that are on the schedule
Track latest score updates in real-time for ongoing games
Find past games and their final scores
These features are immediately feasible as they leverage existing data from the Cornell Athletics website. The other ideated features require more customization or approval, and may have lower impact for the MVP since they don’t directly address the primary information gap.
Design System
Before creating designs, I defined Score's brand identity and standardized visual components to ensure cohesiveness across the App. I selected crimson as our primary color to evoke energy and align with Cornell's identity.
To enhance clarity and accessibility, I set icons used in selectors from outlined to filled in their selected states. For non-fillable icons, I used adjustments like changing stroke widths and adding new elements to provide additional visual cues for the selected states.
Visual Design: Upcoming Schedules
For the Schedules page, I refined spacings and button alignments to improve visual clarity and accessibility.
For the sports selectors that filter game results based on sports type, I explored both fixed width and hug content layout options, eventually choosing the latter to ensure space efficiency and accommodate different text lengths.
Visual Design: Live Score Updates & Game Details
For the Game Details page where game logistics and live scores are displayed, I iterated on the visual hierarchy to ensure emphasis on key information that we identified were important during user interviews, such as enlarging game stats and highlighting the winning side.
For the score board displaying real-time scores, I explored several options to highlight the winning side. I decided to use the glow effect for its balance between drawing visual attention and maintaining a gentle contrast.

Product Management
In addition to designing, I also led a cross-functional team of frontend and backend developers on building the MVP as product manager. I outlined product roadmaps, led sprints, and updated Notion tickets throughout the process, leading our team to complete 25 tickets and 21 PRs in one semester, finishing the MVP on iOS and nearly Android for internal testing.
Before we officially launch the MVP, I plan on conducting more in-depth user testing to identify potential usability issues and inform necessary design adjustments. After our first launch, I will continue to lead the design and development of additional customization features, such as saving games and setting custom notifications, to further create a tailored user experience.
